Anthropic Clears Its Export-Control Standoff and Ships Sonnet 5 and Claude Science

One company dominated the AI news cycle over the past day: Anthropic closed out an 18-day dispute with Washington over its most powerful models, while simultaneously launching a new flagship coding model and a dedicated workbench for scientists.

US lifts export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5

The US Department of Commerce has withdrawn the export control directive it issued on June 12 after Amazon researchers reported a method for bypassing Fable 5’s cybersecurity safeguards. Anthropic says it trained an improved safety classifier that blocks the reported technique in over 99% of cases, and Fable 5 will return globally starting July 1, with Mythos 5 access restored for approved US organizations following government sign-off on June 26.

Anthropic proposes an industry standard for scoring AI jailbreaks

Alongside the redeployment, Anthropic is partnering with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other Project Glasswing members on a shared framework for rating the severity of AI jailbreaks, based on capability gain, breadth, ease of weaponization, and discoverability. The company says it hopes the framework becomes a template for coordinated government and industry response to future safeguard bypasses.

Claude Sonnet 5 launches with frontier agentic performance

Anthropic also introduced Claude Sonnet 5, described as its most agentic Sonnet-class model yet, with performance approaching Opus 4.8 on coding and tool-use benchmarks at a lower price. The model is now the default for Free and Pro plans and is available across Claude Code and the Claude Platform, with introductory pricing of $2/$10 per million input/output tokens through August 31.

Claude Science opens a workbench for researchers

Rounding out the day, Anthropic released Claude Science in beta, an app that bundles more than 60 research-focused skills and connectors for genomics, proteomics, and cheminformatics into a single environment that runs on a scientist’s own laptop, cluster, or HPC login node. Early users, including Manifold Bio and researchers at the Allen Institute and UCSF, report the tool has cut analysis and literature-review timelines from years to weeks.

What to watch: Fable 5’s global return on July 1 and Google’s still-pending Gemini 3.5 Pro release will be the next tests of whether Anthropic’s momentum holds through the summer.

The past day in AI was defined less by new models than by the business and geopolitics around them, as a major intellectual-property clash, a landmark Hollywood partnership, and an accelerating talent race all moved into the spotlight.

Anthropic Accuses Alibaba of Illicitly ‘Distilling’ Claude

Anthropic has publicly accused Chinese technology giant Alibaba of running a large-scale campaign to extract capabilities from its Claude models. According to the company, operators linked to Alibaba’s Qwen lab used roughly 25,000 fraudulent accounts to conduct 28.8 million exchanges between late April and early June, targeting Claude’s software-engineering and agentic-reasoning strengths. It marks the first time Anthropic has named a major Chinese conglomerate as the source of a distillation attack. CNBC reports the details.

Google DeepMind and A24 Strike a $75M Filmmaking Pact

Google DeepMind and independent studio A24 announced a first-of-its-kind research partnership to build AI tools shaped by working filmmakers. Google’s roughly $75 million investment notably excludes A24’s film library and data from any training use, though the deal has already drawn pushback from some of the studio’s fans. DeepMind outlines the collaboration.

The Talent War Intensifies

The competition for elite researchers is heating up, with reports that two more senior Gemini researchers are leaving Google for Anthropic—the fourth such departure in six days. The churn underscores how aggressively frontier labs are competing for the small pool of people capable of pushing model capabilities forward. MarketingProfs rounds up the week’s moves.

Qualcomm Bets Big on the AI Software Stack

Qualcomm moved to acquire AI startup Modular in a deal valued at nearly $4 billion, aiming to bolster its software stack and data-center ambitions as it pushes deeper into AI infrastructure. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026. CNBC has the report.

What to watch: All eyes remain on OpenAI’s anticipated GPT-5.6, whose launch window has slipped amid shifting prediction-market odds—a reminder that even the most-tracked releases rarely arrive on schedule.

AI Moves Into the Workday as Regulators Sharpen the Rules

Anthropic puts an always-on Claude inside Slack

Anthropic launched Claude Tag, a persistent AI teammate that lives inside Slack channels rather than a one-off chatbot. Running on the Opus 4.8 model, it adds shared memory, cross-channel context and an ambient mode that can proactively flag information and follow up on forgotten threads. The feature is available to Claude Enterprise and Team customers and replaces the older “Claude in Slack” app, with a 30-day migration window. Fortune and SiliconANGLE have the details.

Superhuman buys GPTZero to bolt on authenticity

Superhuman—the company formed after Grammarly acquired the email client and rebranded—agreed to acquire GPTZero, the AI-detection startup with more than 19 million registered users and roughly $30 million in annual recurring revenue. Terms were not disclosed. GPTZero’s authenticity suite, spanning AI detection, hallucination checks and citation verification, will fold into Superhuman Go while continuing as a standalone product. More via TechCrunch.

OpenAI readies a full-duplex voice mode

OpenAI is preparing “Bidi 1,” a bidirectional voice model that aims to make spoken conversations feel natural: it can listen while you talk, accept mid-sentence interruptions and switch tasks on the fly. Early demos point to real-time translation across dozens of languages and small, human-like acknowledgments instead of awkward pauses. The rollout is being tested for ChatGPT, as TestingCatalog reports.

Europe firms up its high-risk AI guidelines

On the policy side, the public consultation on the European Commission’s draft guidelines for classifying high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act closed today. The three-part guidance clarifies general principles and use cases ahead of the Act’s broader applicability in August 2026, giving providers clearer signals on where the heaviest obligations will land. Background from Global Policy Watch.

What to watch: as assistants become persistent colleagues rather than tools, expect authenticity, governance and voice to be the next battlegrounds—and watch for OpenAI’s voice model to reach a wider audience.

The center of gravity in artificial intelligence keeps shifting toward Anthropic this week, as the lab’s soaring valuation, a high-profile talent win, and fresh US rules on frontier models all collide. Here is what is shaping the conversation today.

Anthropic vaults past OpenAI on valuation and files confidentially for an IPO

Anthropic has closed a financing round valuing the company at roughly $965 billion, edging ahead of rival OpenAI, and has confidentially submitted a draft registration statement signaling a march toward a public listing. The raise underscores how aggressively investors are backing frontier-model developers despite mounting questions about compute costs and returns. More on the shake-up.

A Nobel laureate joins Anthropic as Google loses two AI heavyweights

In a striking reshuffle of AI talent, John Jumper, the Nobel laureate behind AlphaFold, is leaving Google DeepMind for Anthropic, while Transformer co-author and Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is reported to be heading to OpenAI. The back-to-back departures highlight how fiercely the leading labs are competing for a small pool of foundational researchers. Read the details.

Washington’s new executive order reshapes the frontier-model rulebook

The White House’s executive order on “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security” continues to ripple through the industry. It establishes an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse and a voluntary framework letting developers submit “covered frontier models” for federal evaluation before release, while explicitly ruling out any mandatory licensing regime. Read the order.

Export controls keep two Anthropic models offline

Anthropic’s newest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, remain suspended worldwide following a US export-control directive, leaving some paying subscribers without access as a free-trial window closes. The episode is a concrete early test of how national-security policy now intersects with day-to-day model availability. Latest model tracker.

Gemini 3.5 Pro still in limited preview

Google’s much-anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro remains available only in limited preview to select enterprise customers after repeated delays, even as DeepMind touts progress from its AlphaEvolve system across genomics, quantum physics, and mathematics. The gap between demo and general availability is becoming a recurring theme this season. See the tracker.

What to watch: whether Anthropic’s IPO timeline firms up, and how quickly labs opt into the government’s voluntary frontier-model review framework.

Frontier Race Tightens as Smarter Robots Step Onto the Floor

The late-June model wars are running hot: Google pushed a flagship into general availability, OpenAI answered, and the day’s most interesting signal came from outside the chat window — frontier reasoning is now being wired directly into machines that move.

Google takes Gemini 3.5 Pro to general availability

Google DeepMind moved Gemini 3.5 Pro into general availability, positioning it at the top of its lineup just as rivals refresh their own flagships. Early comparisons place it directly against Anthropic’s Fable 5 and OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 series on reasoning and coding benchmarks, underscoring how compressed the frontier has become. Read the late-June head-to-head breakdown here.

OpenAI keeps the pressure on with a refreshed flagship

OpenAI continued its rapid release cadence, with its newest GPT-5-class model featured alongside Gemini and Claude in this week’s frontier comparisons. The pattern is familiar: faster responses, sharper reasoning, and aggressive pricing as each lab tries to hold the default-model slot in consumer and developer products. The latest model tracker is available here.

Boston Dynamics puts Gemini reasoning inside Spot

Boston Dynamics partnered with Google Cloud and DeepMind to embed Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 into its Spot robot and Orbit inspection platform. The integration is meant to give the machines stronger spatial reasoning, more autonomous decision-making, and continuous learning in messy industrial settings — a concrete sign that frontier models are migrating from screens to the factory floor. Details on Google Cloud’s recent AI moves are here.

Europe bets on an open-source frontier model

The European Commission selected the EUROPA consortium to build an open-source frontier model spanning all 24 official EU languages, part of its Frontier AI Grande Challenge. Paired with a new code of practice on labelling AI-generated content and transparency rules landing in August, the move signals Europe’s intent to compete on capability, not just regulation. Background on the EU’s framework is here.

What to watch: with three labs trading flagships within days of each other and reasoning models now steering hardware, the next test is whether benchmark gains translate into reliable, real-world autonomy.

Fable 5 Stays Dark as Anthropic Doubles Down on Korea

Two weeks into the U.S. export-control freeze on Anthropic’s most capable models, the standoff dominates the day’s AI news. Below, where things stand and the other moves worth tracking.

Anthropic and Washington edge toward a Fable 5 deal

Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models remain offline, more than a week after a U.S. directive barred foreign-national access and the company disabled both worldwide rather than attempt real-time nationality filtering. Executives say a return is close — international chief Chris Ciauri told reporters the company is “very confident” access will be restored “in the coming days” — and both sides are reported to be working toward a framework that swaps an impossible “zero jailbreaks” bar for proactive testing and government notification. Prediction markets still price only a ~57% chance of restoration before July. The Globe and Mail has the latest on the negotiations.

Anthropic’s Seoul push lands its biggest enterprise wave yet

Even amid the freeze, Anthropic opened a Seoul office and announced a cluster of major Korean deployments: NAVER rolling out Claude Code across its engineering org, plus Samsung SDS, LG CNS, Hanwha and Nexon adopting Claude at scale. The company also signed an AI-safety MOU with Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT covering Korean-language model evaluation. Anthropic calls it one of its most significant single days in Asia-Pacific.

OpenAI acquires Astral, maker of uv and ruff

OpenAI is buying Astral, the company behind the widely adopted Python tools uv and ruff, with plans to fold them into its Codex coding platform. The deal hands OpenAI a foothold in the everyday Python developer workflow, though terms and the open-source roadmap remain unclear — a point of concern for a community built on those tools’ open licensing. The New Stack reported the acquisition.

Google returns to smart speakers with Gemini inside

Google has launched its first smart speaker in roughly six years, this time with Gemini as the built-in assistant and natural, multi-turn conversation. The move reopens a hardware front against Amazon’s Nova-powered Alexa and Apple’s Gemini-bound Siri, making 2026 the most competitive voice-AI cycle in years. Coverage via LLMBase.

What to watch: whether Fable 5 comes back online before the standoff hardens into precedent — and whether Google’s long-promised Gemini 3.5 Pro ships before its end-of-June window closes.

About the Mission

Enterprise architect Fedasil Mission This is a mission within the Fedasil agency within the ICT service. This assignment is necessary within the establishment of the FPS Migration. Fedasil strives to professionalize the data exchange between various internal applications and external sources, among other things to facilitate reporting. The chosen solution involves the implementation of a centralized data layer. In addition, the agency participates in the eMigration program, and the challenges of meeting architectural and information communication expectations are significant. eMigration is the program that sets up computerization and optimization for the following entities (DVZ, CGVS and RVV). When setting up the FPS Migration, it is desirable to arrive at a joint tobe architecture for the eMigration program and the various programs that exist within Fedasil. To successfully carry out these strategic and tactical missions for Fedasil, it is proposed to appoint an Enterprise/Business Architect, whose expertise is currently not available within the agency. That is why it has been decided to launch this function as a mission for a consultant on the market. Objectives The Enterprise Architect is responsible for compiling an inventory of applications (including Match-IT, CAAMI, Cumul, etc.). He/she must also describe all data flows within the agency, including those with external parties (Social Security Crossroads, Civil Register, partners, etc.). A significant part of this data is stored in a data warehouse.Based on this inventory, he/she can propose a targeted solution to create a centralized data layer that facilitates data exchange between applications. On the one hand, the agency can more easily generate reports from consolidated databases by cross-referencing available data. On the other hand, Fedasil’s participation in the eMigration program is optimized (in consultation with the architect of the eMigration program) by simplifying data flows within the agency and centralizing the data to be exchanged. This includes the following concrete assignments Business architect: To guarantee the link between application and data layer (see below) on the one hand and the customer on the other hand at a tactical and strategic level, a business architecture is set up. Drawing up a capability map. Application layer: Inventory and analysis of (AS IS and TO BE) application landscape. Data layer: Mapping (AS IS and TO BE) relationships and links between the above applications, data flows and proposals for optimization via Centralized Data Layer (Taking into account current architectural components Azure Data Warehouse and PowerBI and in consultation with software architect of Match-IT and the Head of Data and Analysis). Analyze current documentation and set up an action plan to get it up to standard. Analyzing synergies and gaps within your own architecture and identifying possible optimizations with the eMigration program (in consultation with the eMigration architect) and the FPS Migration. This position will initially be deployed in the context of the Support Services Working Group in the context of the establishment of the FPS Migration. This for the following domains: ICT, HR, Facility/LOG, FIN/MP. Assignments will be further adjusted and refined in mutual consultation and can be adjusted as necessary.
